Welcome to our inaugural ALT Newsletter, designed to keep you updated on what we are doing.

Since our inception in March 2019, a lot has happened. Our first year of existence was spent in setting up operational, financial and legal systems – as well as initial partnerships – in South Africa, Ghana and Zambia.

In February 2020, we had our first Being a Leader course at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. The following month – while still basking in the success of the Ghana course – the Covid pandemic hit, causing a global shutdown.

With the world on lockdown, we pivoted and launched an online course, targeting “climate leaders” in Zambia. Prof Felix Masiye, then Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zambia opened the Zambia Climate Leadership Transformation (ZCLT) Summit, attended by 47 climate leaders.

The Summit later led to the InnoVuntu Project, a collaborative platform of engaged systems leaders catalyzing high-impact innovative solutions for a more resilient food system in Zambia. The project is now a partnership with the Washington-based Global Knowledge Initiative (GKI). It was also during the Covid pandemic that the Africa Women’s Leadership and Mental Wellbeing Course was launched. By the end of the year, this women-only, practical leadership course, will have empowered 750 women in more than 25 African countries. Here’s a video that shares about forgiveness, one of the five topics covered by the course.

Our first grant was secured towards the end of 2021; this was to support the design of the African Faith-inspired Changemakers Leadership Course (FCLC). To date, nearly 100 faith leaders have been trained. This course is a partnership of the Lake Malawi Anglican University (LAMAU) and Theological Education by Extension Zambia (TEEZ).

Participants of the FCLC also get a certificate in the Map of Meaning’s Introduction to Faith Changemakers Course. The ALT Foundation will be launching the work of Map of Meaning International in Africa next year.
